Aristotle's Big 3

Give an example of an advertisement you've seen on TV which you feel contains one or more of Aristotle's 3 appeals (logos, ethos, pathos).  Describe the commercial, and tell what you think of it.  In your description, identify one (or more) of the 3 appeals.  What specifically does the advertisement say or do to appeal to the audience using logos, ethos, or pathos.  THEN, respond to at least one other post from a classmate. Original posts should be 100 words or longer; peer responses should be at least one sentence.  BLOG posts are due by Sunday evening at 9:00 p.m.

  1. For me, the best commercial with an example of Ethos, Logos and Pathos is the winner of the 2010 Best TV Advertisement Award from Nolan's Cheddar. In it, a mouse is depicted trying to eat cheese off of a mousetrap, accompanied by music. Naturally, the mouse is ensnared within the trap, but instead of dying "Eye of the Tiger" begins to play and the mouse does bench presses with the metal bar. The Pathos within the commercial, besides the appealing cuteness of the mouse, is the humor in it of a mouse bench pressing, which is a play on their slogan--seriously strong. Logos is the fact that it is award winning Cheddar cheese, meaning that it stands above competition, which leads into Ethos, because Nolan's Cheddar has been around since the 1850's surviving the market.

    1. I think this is a great commercial too because of the music and the idea of a mouse bench pressing.

    2. I thought the commercial was greatly affected by the music choices and the simplicity of the idea of being strong. It was a cute commercial probably because of the addition of the petite mouse.

    3. (wouldnt allow me to reply anywhere else)A commercial that has always made me laugh and applies to Aristotle's Logos, Pathos, Ethos is Geico's woodchuck commercial. It starts out with two woodchucks chucking a farmers wood into a pond and the farmer comes along in his tractor yelling, "hey you woodchucks!! Quit chucking my wood!" The pathos in the commercial is the humor of the wood chucks actually chucking wood when obviously in real life they don't chuck wood. The logos in the commercial is at the end when they say, "15 min could save you 15% or more on car insurance." This tells the viewers that they are the better deal.

  2. I think the best example of a commercial that contains ethos, logos, and pathos, would be the cheerios commercial. You see the pathos with the cute little kid trying to pour cheerios on his father's heart, and your heart warms a little bit because the boy's smile is so cute. The logos for this commercial is that it is heart healthy, as mentioned by the little boy. Finally, the ethos is that the company has to be reputable because they sell their product to nice families, and donate money to schools through the box tops programs.

  3. A good example of a commercial containing a couple of Aristotle's Big Three is the Nike commercial with the jogger, twelve year-old Nathan. Logos is given to us with the stated facts about greatness, and how it's achievable for everyone because it's not a rare DNA strand; but, as common to our bodies as breathing. This also works as a pathos because our hearts are pulling for Nathan to make progress on becoming a healthy twelve year-old boy. He started his journey overweight with hopes to achieve greatness and get on a better track for his future.

Tirzah: I remember that commercial with the mouse bench-pressing. Maybe that's what makes it memorable, the use of these elements.
Lydia: All of the Cheerio commercials are heartwarming!

  4. My favorite commercial is ESPN "Michael Jordan". It is a video showing scenes of a mans life who happens to have the name Michael Jordan. In these scenes it shows people looking and then saying "ohh". They thought they were going to see the real Jordan, but instead met a normal guy, who has nothing to do with basketball. For instance, one scene shows a chef coming out with a bottle of wine. The waiter looks at him and waved him away. The reason was, it wasn't Jordan. The Pathos is people laughing because they know some guy out there has been dealing with this all his life. Ethos is that the commercial is from ESPN, the world-wide leader in sport coverage.

Brinsley: Just watch that commercial on youtube, Nike always makes you want to achieve greatness.

  5. The Pepsi Max commercials are my personal favorites. They are the ones with Kyrie Irving, an NBA player, and he dresses up as an old man and plays a pick up game with some young guys and ends up just dominating the court. The other one is Jeff Gordon, a NASCAR driver, who goes to a test drive and takes the sales person with him for a wild ride like he was actually driving a race car, and the sales person was in a panic. They are actually both really entertaining with extended versions online. An example of ethos would be that Pepsi Max is backed by Kyrie Irving, and Jeff Gordon. There is also humor and action which would be under the pathos.

Tirzah: Great example, that was a great commercial and really includes Aristotles Big 3 now that I think about it.

  6. One of my favorite commercials is the GEICO "Hump Day" commercial. It opens with a talking camel wandering through an office asking people what day it is. No one is quick to respond, until someone finally mutters, "It's Hump Day" with very little enthusiasm. Immediately, the camel shouts "Woot woot!" and then "Hump Dayyy!" This short commercial is a good example of Aristotle's Pathos because it appeals to human emotions. It's humorous, and once they grab your attention, they inform you of the facts, "Save hundreds of dollars", "15 minutes could save you 15% or more" (which is Logos).

Tirzah: That is a really good example- portraying all three of Aristotle's ideas very well. It's so memorable and still popular, even though it's not as new as some of the other commercials.

    1. This is a great example of puns gone horribly wrong (but then again, when do they ever go right [they don't; at least, not for me]?). The ethos gets to me because it reminds me how annoying I actually am, which makes me feel sympathetic to the camel. Geico's really pullin' out the big guns, eh?

  7. An example of Aristotle's Big Three is the Chevy commercial "Strong" where they are advertising the 2014 Silverado. The logos in the commercial is at the end where they compare the Silverado to the Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra. They are saying that the Silverado is better than those. The ethos is how strong the truck was when it was first built and how it still is today. The pathos is the song played, at the beginning where the guy in the new truck waves to the guy in the old truck, and the whole country feel is laid back and it shows how strong people are in their daily lives.

Tirzah: Really good example. It really portrays all of Aristotle's Big Three.

  8. One advertisement that I have seen on TV that makes me think of the three terms that Aristotle made are the AT & T commercials. My favorite one would have to be the one where the children are trying to think of the biggest number they can. Logos is represented by the company saying that they are the largest 4g network. Ethos is represented by the company saying that bigger is better and that it's not complicated. What the mean by this is that if you choose their company, your life will be better. Finally, Pathos is represented by the humor that takes place in the commercial. When one of the children out-numbers the adult, everyone's reaction was hilarious.

  9. The "This is sprotscenter" commericals are a fantastic example of ethos logos and pathos. The pathos is the most clear of the three to see because almost all of them try to provide humor. The ethos is displayed by when they state they are the world wide leader in sports which they are. The Logos is shown by the different sports stars that use in each commercial to show kind of their "product"

  10. I thought the most successful commercial I've seen in a while has to be the infamous K-mart ship my pants commercial. While I seem to have missed all its glorious airtime on t.v., I have contributed to the almost 20 million views on youtube a few times. The main aristotlean appeal is clearly ethos. It leans toward the humor aspect pretty heavily and is more of a marketing success than a phenomenon among genius advertisements full of heart and whit. Logos could be traced to the end of the ad where it also advertises 65 million products online. (an impressive number) The last appeal, pathos, could be the fact that they will ship the products for 'free.' I mean, why would a sneaky sales ad ever advertise something as free that isn't really free.

  11. I think one of the perfect examples for the Big 3 would have to be Sarah McLachlan's animal guilt commercials. The commercials mostly consist of playing sad music, while showing sad animal footage, while giving you sad facts you can muse over. The logos is represented by how they say an animal in BC is abused every hour. For ethos, they tell you that 3000 animals have been rescued in the past year, and they have a celebrity asking you to donate. And for pathos, well, I'm pretty sure these commercials just drip with it. Between the music and the animals, the guilt is overflowing, like a waterfall of shame. For me personally, I always flip the channels whenever I begin to hear that song, because if I don't, I'll probably end up crying and trying to shove money at my t.v screen.

  12. One of my top all time favorite commercials is the State Farm one with the old man who has a fishing pole with a dollar on the end. It showed Logos with the women being able to buy the purse because all the money she saves by being with State Farm. Then at the end shows some Pathos with the elderly man pulling the dollar away from the other women comically says she has to be quicker than that.

  13. His charm is so contagious, vaccines have been created for it. His snowglobe gets twenty-four inches of fresh powder, annually, His legend precedes him, the way lightning precedes thunder. He is the most interesting man in the world, and though he does not always drink beer, he prefers Dos Equis.

He allows the commercial to exude ethos. The way he opens himself to the world makes all of the general populous believe in him, though he doesn't need it. Like it was said before, if he were to punch you the face, you would have to fight the urge to thank him.

He permits pathos by stating that though he doesn't always let beer the privilege of gracing his body, Dos Equis has something different that evokes his interest, which, coming from him, means it is a substitute for ambrosia, not that he needs one.

Logos was everything. Truth bends for him.

  14. I can't recall the specific brand, however, I think toothpaste commercials have the most logos I've ever seen! Generally they show the toothpaste, then show a chart on how this toothpaste is better than any of the other leading brands. It shows the oposing brand not making your teeth white, leaving plaque on your teeth, etc. Usually at the end, there's some sort of statistic that says, "9 out of 10 denstists reccomend this brand." I understand this is a generalization. However, all the toothpaste commercials I've seen do this!!! They also show happy, smiling people. Giving off the impression that this toothpaste makes you happier and more confident in your smile. This is ethos. It shows you can trust the brand and that it will have the same effects on you.

  15. The Etrade commercial with the baby talking about stocks shows the pathos, ethos, and logos. The baby is attached to his mom by one of those strap baby holder things and starts talking about loop holes in contracts. The logos is when he states the people lose thousands every year through loopholes. The pathos is the cute baby as well as the humor in the fact that he is talking about very sophisticated things. Finally, the ethos is their slogan "Less for us, more for you." This is referring to money and shows Etrade is looking out for you instead of themselves.

  16. Im pretty sure the best example of logos, pathos and ethos in a commercial is the Colgate dentist commercial. It talks a lot about how their item is the absolute best and is backed up with the facts for it. A couple of the facts was 1. that ONLY Colgate total reduces gingivitis by 88% and 2. that ONLY Colgate total reduces plaque by up to 98% and these provide both the ethos and the logos. It shows how they are the leading brand over all the other because their product can reduce rates of gingivitis more than any other. Lastly the pathos in this commercial was that a woman who was telling about the product was worried for her health because plaque and gingivitis is not good to have.

After taking his coworkers for a ride in his volkswagen their moods shift to being delighted to be at work, along with their newly spoken Jamaican accents. 18. The commercial I think about when I think about logos, ethos and pathos is the Pediasure commercials. The logos they show are always saying that its healthy for your kids and part of a balanced diet. The ethos in it is when they say that your kids will love it guaranteed. The pathos in it how they always show a mother and child bonding time and it shows them happy and laughing and the child loving the pediasure.

The commercial then showed an Egyptian looking at cube blueprints. For the ethos, there are several different people that are telling the audience how great the deal is for the five dollar footlong sub; including Michael Phelps. So having all of these people telling us this, we know that we can trust them that this is a great deal. The pathos is that all of these people are happy and excited about the price for the subs that it makes us happy and want to buy the footlongs too. The logos is that there is alot of favorites all day every day. Overall the commercial got me hungry and made me want to go buy a footlong sub which is what the author wants.

  22. One commercial that I believe has excellent examples of "Aristotle's Big Three" is the AT&T "its not complicated" ads. An example of ethos found in this ad is when at the conclusion of the commercial AT&T credits itself as the Nation's fastest 3G network. An example of pathos is the emotional appeal to the commercial to its viewers. The concept of having children for-shadow the idea that “its not complicated” while making the viewers feel bad that no one laughed at the boy’s joke of “queening my dishes.” Also, an example of logos in this commercial is persuading the audience that they won’t have to read between the lines and will not be confused on the company’s facts.

  23. A commercial that I watched on Youtube has all of the "Aristotle's Big 3" which was in the ETrade 'Baby' Super Bowl Ad. Logos in implied in this commercial when the baby says," You can loose to about 10,000 dollars by using 401K towards hidden fees." So its telling you the math of how much money you loose with using the 401K and to come join ETrade. Pathos is implied by how they use the baby for cuteness and the music to make people watch it, and how they show what you can do with the money you save along with the baby. Last would be ethos which was, "Or just go to ETrade and save it. BOOM!" Telling us how we can trust then for saving our money for our enjoyment.

  24. One of the commercials that I think shows a good example of Pathos is the T-Mobile Jump! Mugger Commercial. A mugger approaches a man in a parking garage with an apparent gun in his pocket. He tells the man to hand over his phone. (The suspense in this moment exemplifies Pathos.) Then, the man more than willingly hands over his phone. The mugger looks at the phone with distaste and tries to give it back. The man begs the mugger to take the phone, while the mugger reveals he doesn't even have a gun. In the end, the man puts his hand in his pocket and pretends to have a gun in order to try to get the mugger to take his phone. (This end portion also exhibits Pathos in its humor.)

  25. Some of my favorite commercials are the Allstate Mayhem commercials. They show pathos in the humor of the grown man acting like different objects that create awful car damage, or even other people. Especially in the "Hot Babe Out Jogging" one, pathos is shown because it's funny to pretend he is a grown woman jogging on the sidewalk, and it's humorous that the other man would crash his car watching him jogging down the street. It also shows ethos because Allstate says they will protect you, they will protect you better than the competition, etc.

  26. When I was asked to do this blog about “Aristotle’s Big Three”, I had a commercial pop into my head right away. I think that an Allstate commercial did a good job of this. It is a commercial of a very professional looking man in a suit but he is driving a pink car pretending to be a teenage girl. The “girl” is driving in the car is upset because her best friend said that her other friend kissed Johnny and that’s a problem because she likes him- she then proceeds to smash into a car and drive off. It shows pathos because it ties into the human emotions and it makes us laugh. It also demonstrates ethos at the end because the last thing was a man with a very reassuring voice saying “No one protects you from mayhem like Allstate”

  27. A commercial I can think of that includes the three appeals is the Samsung Galaxy “Next Big Thing” commercial. Hundreds of Apple geeks are shown waiting in line outside Apple stores for the next iPhone, and the commercial is centered around making fun of them. It portrays them as being brainwashed Apple followers that barely even know anything about the next iPhone. It also shows a young guy waiting in line for his parents, saying that the iPhone is for old people. This humor is the pathos in the commercial. Then it shows people using the Galaxy S3 and just touching their phones together to share videos. It also shows how the S3 has a much larger screen than the iPhone. This is the logos because it is showing features the S3 has that the iPhone doesn’t.

  28. My favorite commericial is the AT&T ones. It starts with a man and 4 children sitting around a table in a classroom. He asks them what is the biggest # they can think of. One of them says a trillion billion zillion. Another says 10. The third kid says infinty. And the last kid says infinity and one. And the man says sorry we were looking for infinity plus infinity. Then one of the kids says what infinity times infinity. And the man puts his hand by his head and makes a sound of an explosion (like his mind was just blown). The pathos is the humor of the kids answers and the mans reaction. The ethos is when the voice over says, "It's not complicated, bigger is better." The logos is that AT&T has the largest 4G network.

  29. The State Farm commercial trying to portray their new mobile site is a good example of "Aristotle's big three." A woman walks up to a man reporting an accident on his cell phone and tells him that the internet told her State Farm couldn't do that. And the internet also told her that the nerdy looking man she was supposed to be meeting was a French model. The ethos in this commercial was that State Farm is more trustworthy than things the internet can tell you. When they tell the viewer "more mobile than ever," it is an example of logos because it compares themselves to their own company and others. One of the many examples of pathos is the humor when her "french model" date is nothing close and also the man is reporting an accident so it makes you feel like you would want it to be that easy if it happened to you.

He sings the jingle which is "Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there" and his agent appears. The Egos in this commercial is the fact that, like a good neighbor, a State Farm agent is always there for you whenever you need them. The Pathos applies to humor. After the agent appears, the man's friends start asking for things like a sandwich, a girl from another apartment, and a hot tub.

She questions if one of them is wearing her wedding dress. He replies "it could be."

  33. One of my favorite commercials is a Progressive commercial with Flo. In it, it's a dark and rainy night, and a man is standing next to his car talking on the phone. He is saying things like "I need you, I don't want to be alone" and it looks like the beginning to this whole chick flick. Suddenly the camera turns and there is Flo walking toward the street toward him. She says "You're not alone" and then there's a buildup of more dramatic dialogue and music, and right as it's at the top of the buildup, the music stops and Flo goes "I'll call you a rental!" I think it was a good example of pathos because it drew the watcher in and then used humor to bring attention to the brand.

  34. Yesterday i was on youtube, and a add popped up, one of those adds that let you skip it after 5 seconds. but in those 5 seconds they showed a beat up trailer, and a little boy saying "i have a dream". I guess the pathos got me and i ended up watched the hole 2 1/2 minute add. The add went on to talk about the boys dream to play high school basketball, and what was stoping him. he was to poor to afford shoes. In the last 30 seconds it shows toms giving the child a pair of shoes, and a guy talks about how "for every pair of shoes we sell we donate a pair to a child in need". The logos is that statistic and the ethos would be the toms name. I know it isn't a television commercial, but i thought it was a great example of logos ethos and pathos.

  35. I imagine you all know about the Allstate "Mayhem" commercials. As a collective whole they are a good example for pathos, in particular. They use humour as an appeal, with the mayhem character pretending to be things like "An emotionally compromised teenage girl" as well as a snowbank on a roof. Fundamentally though, while they remind you about this with humor, they are establishing anxiety about the future in order to persuade you to get insurance. Finally, they want you to get /Allstates/ insurance, so they will generally remind you of their credibility at the end for some ethos

  36. The Kia car commercials always get me. I don't necessarily think its the most appealing looking car, but they do a good job of advertising with the cute hamsters. The new commercials shows the hamsters that are overweight and could use some exercise working out to the new Lady Gaga song, "Applause". They work out doing many different exercises and finally they show up in a Kia Sol at a red carpet premiere. The hamsters are look pretty spiffy in suits, slicked back hair, and sunglasses. For the ethos, Lady Gaga song. For the pathos, they have the cute and funny hamsters. The commercial also uses words like "All New" to catch the viewers. This commercials always makes me want to watch it and not change the channel. I think Kia does a good job of hooking people into watching!

  37. The commercial that always gets me is the ASPCA commercial. The commercial uses a celebrity endorsement do encourage viewers to donate to the ASPCA. They use the celebrity endorsement as ethos for reliability and ensuring viewers that their money would go to a great cause. The ASPCA commercials also use pathos by showing you neglected, abused, and starving animals dying on television just begging you to rip out your credit card to save their lives. The ASPCA also tries to get you to cave in to donating by giving you this "beautiful t-shirt" free of charge just for donating. I'm not sure which of the three appeals this would fall under though.

  38. The one that sticks out to me the most is the Kia commercial with the hamsters. It starts out with the three overweight hamsters and they start working out to lose weight. In the back ground plays Lady Gaga's "Applause" and soon they start working out to the rhythm of the song. While they are working out, short clips of a man working on the Kia are shown. At the end, the hamsters step out of the new Kia car and onto a red carpet where a ton of people are waiting for them. Then they go into saying all of the offers Kia has. A really good example of pathos is the humor of the whole thing, the hamsters losing weight. Everyone really knows that hamsters can't lose weight like humans do.

  39. My favorite commercials are the Uncle Drew commercials by Pepsi. These ads feature Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love, both NBA players, going to parks dressed up as old men to play pick up ball. They mess around and sell their disguise in the beginning, but then turn in on and show how good they are. This represents pathos because it plays off of my love of basketball and it fosters warm feelings. It also shows ethos because they have current NBA players and the great Bill Russel.

  40. I chose a Duracell commercial where there are fire fighters trying to get out of a burning house that is about to fall down. Pathos in the commercial is a firefighter jamming out to some music which use the same batteries as their communicators. Ethos in the commercial is if firefighters trust the battery to help get them do their job safely, then you should trust them too.

  41. The ASPCA commercial sticks out the most to me. The ethos is obviously the celebrity endorsement. It shows the credibility and trustworthiness of the company if they have a celebrity that supports it. The logos is them telling you that by donating your money you can save the life of a helpless dog. The pathos is the biggest one in this commercial. The sad music with the images of the starving neglected dogs definitely pulls on your heart strings. Whenever I hear the commercial come on I always change the channel, although I don't know if that's a good thing.

  42. Apple's commercial, Our Signature, had a very inspirational and emotional twist to it. It told of how their products are there to make people content and to make the world a better place. The pathos was the quiet, musical chime that played in the background giving the idea that Apple's products are for positive use. The Ethos is narrator telling the audience of how their product "enhances the lives of each person it touches". Finally, the Logos was not show through facts, but the narrator expressing how their product is useful in our world.

The dad just got the new iphone and his 5 year old daughter received is old one. When they were out shopping a guy made a comment about her having a phone at her age. That's when he tells the father about the new website. And at the end the daughter is upset that she didn't have the smart phone anymore. I don't remember what the website was called. The Logos: is the amount of you could receive. The Ethos: how easy it is. The Pathos: when the little girl is upset that her dad sold "her" phone

  44. I particularly like the commercial for Berlitz language education. It shows a German coast guard personnel- that knows only his language- trying to communicate with an English speaking captain that's sinking. This commercial applies both to pathos and logos. The pathos is humorous; the German coastguard member mistakes "we're sinking" for "we're thinking", and replies "what are you thinking about?" The logos is the appeal that learning a foreign language will make your life easier. Although the commercial presented an exaggerated example of language barriers, it still shows that you will avoid awkward encounters by knowing more than one language.

  45. A commercial that portrays "Aristotle's Big Three" is the More than Medication commercial. It’s about a brother doing something out of love and care for his sick sister to make her feel better, even if it’s just temporary. He had painted all over the building wall across from his sister’s room. On it were many beautiful flowers and a big "Be Brave" sign. The pathos in this commercial is the sad feeling for his sister who has been sick, but also the "awe" feeling after seeing what the brother had done for his sister. The ethos would be that it shows people there’s more than medication that can heal people, that can make a sick person smile. And lastly the logos would be that people can work together for a healthier world.

They're eating chocolate pudding in the kitchen and the dad mentions that pudding makes his life better and the boy asks why. They continue the commercial with the dad listing off various things telling his on to imagine happened to him. The son invisions himself as his dad and snaps out of his vision, horrified, and says "here you need this more than I do". This one obviously had ethos for alluding that Jell-O could solve all your problems, and that Jell-O would always be there for you. And the pathos is obviously feelings sorry for the dad and all the horrible things he went through in a day, and the son reenacting the average day of his father was very comical.

  47. It may seem kind of weird, but the Safelite windshield repair commercials have always stuck with me. They appeal to the logos by claiming that the process only takes thirty minutes and that it's a fourth of the cost of a windshield replacement. For the ethos, they show a worker and how long he's worked for the business and then also explain how they can come to the customers' homes to fix their windshields. The appeal to the pathos, then--what I believe is the most effective part--is achieved by having the worker seem calm, helpful, kind and simple. I usually only care for funny commercials, but I like this one because there's no BS and it gets the point across effectively.

  48. I think that the Windows Phone commercials are a good example of Aristotle's Big three. The one with Andy Samberg or Will Arnett especially. The Andy Samberg commercial shows him in his house filming a finger puppet show on his new Windows Phone and the one with Will Arnett shows him scheduling his busy lifestyle on his new Windows Phone. The ethos of it is the celebrity endorsement with Will Arnett, Andy Samberg, Jessica Alba, Gwen Stefani, or Cam Newton. The pathos is the humor of it. The logos is the statistics in it and the fact that the Windows Phone is better at taking pictures or videos than the iPhone. The commercial made me think that if a former SNL cast member, professional athlete, actress, or musician likes the phone, then it must be good.

  49. There is a commercial for charter where they talk about all the different sports channels they have. The pathos in this commercial is that they show the narrator "playing" a bunch of different sports, which is supposed to make you laugh, especially since some of the sports are so obscure (swimming not in a pool). The logos is when they list all the different sports they offer "basketball, football, etc.... even the curling championship". The ethos is when they say Charter is for "all your sports needs", like you can count on them to get your sports more than any other cable company.

  50. I think the AT&T It's Not Complicated commercials are a good example of using pathos in advertising. It's basically a group of 4 to 6 children around the ages of 6 to 9 and an adult in a circle and the adult will ask a question relating to why bigger is better in ways that the kids will relate to. Because AT&T is the "nation's largest network" they want to show that "bigger is better" that even kids agree on it. They're using pathos because people like kids and think they're responses to the questions are cute and/or funny.

  51. I think one of my favorite commercials is the Allstate Mayhem Forbidden Apple commercial from the Super Bowl. The Pathos is the at the end of the commercial when it says "A zero-calorie cola in disguise". The Ethos is when the can is shown with the zero calories. The Pathos is Jeff Gordon Dressed up as a weird man and scares this dealer with his driving during the test drive.

The ethos in the commercial is sometimes they have celebrities saying they have taken the pledge to not text and drive. 54. My all time favorite commercial is an advertisement for the 2012 Volkswagen Passat. It shows this little boy dressed up as Darth Vader and he is going around the house trying to make things move or "use the force." Unfortunately, nothing is moving when we holds his hands out to the objects. However, when his dad comes home, he try's one last attempt of "using the force" by trying to make the car start. The car did start and the boy was all excited because he thought he started the car, but it was really the dad just pressing the automatic car starter button on the remote control. The pathos is our own excitement, happiness, and relief that the little boy was finally able to "use the force" and start the car and the father helping his son achieve that. The ethos would be the reliability of the car and how with a push of a button you can turn it on. Lastly, the logos would be the words at the end of the commercial, "...Starting around $20,00. Available summer 2011."

It is mostly Pathos because it is showing videos of this little girl growing up and of her dad typing and posting videos and pictures of her. There is happy music in the background that really adds to that pathos. For logos and possibly ethos it says, "the web is what you make of it". This makes viewers think that they have freedom on google chrome and endless uses for it. Overall the commercial really makes you happy.

My favorites include the little girl who doesn't want to go to bed because she isn't sleepy and wants to spend more time with her dad. I also like the one where Owl City is singing about how oreos can change vampires into liking milk or the big bad wolf into bringing the little pigs cool stuff. In both of these commercials, the audience is either relating to the little girl not wanting to go to bed, or laughing at the silliness of childhood characters. This would be representing the pathos. The ethos would be portrayed as the way Oreos are enjoyed by everyone and can possibly get sharks to share cookies with baby seals. Lastly, the logos would be that the company has been around for 100 years and assuring that they aren't going anywhere. It could be wonderfilled.

  57. The Aaron Rodgers career day commercial for State Farm has examples of logos, ethos, and pathos. In the commercial, Aaron Rodgers is visiting an elementary school classroom for career day. The students proceed to make slightly rude, but funny, comments about his job. The logos in this commercial is that State Farm can save you hundreds of dollars with Discount Double Check. The ethos is that Aaron Rodgers is in the commercial. People see that Aaron supports the company and trust the company more themselves. The pathos is the classroom full of adorable elementary school kids.

  58. One of my favorite commercials is the "Man Your Man Could Smell Like" add from Old Spice. It uses quick and witty humor for its Pathos, stating that Old Spice products smell great as its Logos, and telling you that using Old Spice will make you smell manly as it's Ethos; but the commercial relies much more on its Pathos than either the Logos or Ethos.

The kids respond, "A BUNCH!" and go off into their funny little side notes. This commercial uses pathos by using the cuteness of the kids to draw people attention. The kids are so cute and their responses are so honest, it gets people to really listen to the commercial. It shows ethos because they deal with kids, it shows they care about what the kids think, that they are fair and trustworthy. The logos is at the end where the commercial talks about a deal, trading in a smart phone for only a $99.99 Iphone.

  60. I think the Jello commercial is a great example of Pathos. It is a father and son eating jello together, and the dad explains why he loves it. It then shows the little boy living his fathers life. It is an appeal to Pathos because it is funny, the little boy has a comb-over and is pretending to be an adult and also offering his father his jello at the end which is heartwarming. They use the humor of the older man being "deaf" as a quick Pathos action on top of there shock of not knowing how to use it because it's new. They also dance at the end of the commercial. The Ethos is that Swiffer Wet Jet is a very popular brand. Also they use #SwifferEffect, so you are able to look up the hash-tag if you wanted advice on social networking sites. Logos is shown by the older couple using the wet jet and seeing it is easy to use. Also, the results of the dirty floor is shown on the Swiffer pad.

He then replies that eating cheerios is like eating them with nana. The mother is taken by surprise by this advanced reply from such a youngster, but then agrees. This causes the "awe" feeling, which is pathos. It also sort of hits ethos by giving the idea that Cheerios have been enjoyed for many years. In addition, logos is shown through that Cheerios are good for cholesterol levels and healthy hearts and other stats.

This commercial utilizes the "logo" "Less drama-more fun, Tortino's Pizza Rolls." I guess the kids are kinda cute if your into that kind of stuff, so that would be using Pathos. There are a few different ones, including parents sending their daughter to her first day of school, an artist driving cross country to different painting locations, young children getting soap inside their dad's car while washing it, and a family of four taking a long road trip. I think these commercials are popular and successful because they appeal to two different attitudes and personalities: There is the tough, robust side of Subaru that drives through water, up mountains, and across deserts, and there is also the milder, more emotional side of Subaru that belongs with families and is trusted around children. Both of these personas could be examples of pathos. The ethos of these commercials is that they are trusted enough to be driven long distances with precious cargo. The logos isn't blatantly obvious, but it does appear throughout the commercials when the cars are shown to get good gas mileage and are able to withstand rough conditions.

In this commercial, pathos is utilized very often because of the humor within it. That humor is shown by that Jason is the new head coach of the Tottenham Hotspur, which is a very big club in England. Trying to go outside the box, he attempts to coach fútbol, which is very different in that he used to coach American football. So, he incorporates American football tactics into the team which really sets off the rhythm of the team. So, he gets fired, but that's a great way of how pathos can sell a sport.

One commercial I recently saw was for the Chevy Silverado, It was about this farmer who had a broken fence and one of his calves got out and he went searching all over in his truck for the little cow. It touches your heart seeing him find the baby cow which covers pathos. Also, in the commercial he is driving all over in a raging thunderstorm and it touches on how their product (the truck) is really reliable in the times you'll need it most which can go under the category of ethos. For logos it says something about it being the most fuel efficient V8 in a pick-up truck which makes it more appealing in this age of more fuel efficient and hybrid vehicles.

It shows ethos by showing men doing crazy stunts while drinking Dr. Pepper 10, it makes you feel like you will be a manlier man if you drink it. And finally it shows pathos by saying that you can stick to your lady drinks otherwise but we drink Dr. Pepper 10, this makes you feel like you have to drink it to be a man.

  75. I really enjoy the Allstate Mayhem commercials. These commercials show logos, ethos, and pathos. They show pathos because the commercials are very humorous, with an adult man pretending to be the mayhem that happens in the world. Ethos is represented by showing that mayhem can be unpredictable and is always around and can strike at any time, so the consumer should be prepared. "Mayhem is everywhere, so be better protected with us." That makes the consumers believe that this company is reliable and trustworthy.

Each commercial takes place slightly after the previous one, showing the freecreditreport band guys slowly advancing in life. They start out in a crappy apartment and end up decked out, turnin down hot chicks. That's the ethos to me. The pathos is the song, which'll stay in your head for a while. The logos is that the report is free.
